Scope
Covers seamless colddrawn lowcarbon steel tubes for heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heattransfer equipment. Suitable for moderatetemperature service where corrosion resistance and strength are required.

    Ordering Information

    Purchasers must specify:  
    Quantity (total length or number of tubes)  
    Material (seamless colddrawn lowcarbon steel)  
    Dimensions (outside diameter, wall thickness – in inches [A179] or mm [A179M])  
    Length (cut to size or random lengths)  
    ASTM Designation (A179 for inchpound units, A179M for metric)  
    Testing Requirements (hydrostatic, nondestructive electric test, or other)  
    Certification (if required)  
    Additional Requirements (special finishes, marking, etc.)

    Material & Manufacture

    Steel Process: Made by openhearth, electric furnace, or basic oxygen process.  
    Manufacturing Method: Tubes are colddrawn, seamless, and supplied in asdrawn or annealed condition.

    Test Requirements

    Hydrostatic Test: Each tube must withstand a specified water pressure without leakage (unless replaced by nondestructive testing).  
    Nondestructive Electric Test (NDE): Optional alternative to hydrostatic testing (e.g., eddy current or ultrasonic testing).  
    Flattening Test: A sample tube must flatten without cracking to a specified distance.  
    Flaring Test: A cone expansion test to verify ductility (if required).  
    Hardness Test: Optional, per agreement.

    Dimensions & Tolerances

    Outside Diameter: Permissible variations specified. 
    Wall Thickness: Must meet minimum requirements with allowable tolerances. 
    Length: Cut lengths (±1/8 in. or ±3.2 mm) or random lengths (as agreed).

    Inspection & Certification

    Inspection: By manufacturer; purchaser may request thirdparty verification.  
    Certification: Mill test reports (chemical & mechanical properties) available upon request.

    Marking Requirements

    Each tube must be marked with:  
    ASTM standard (A179/A179M)  
    Manufacturer’s name or trademark  
    Size (OD & wall thickness)  
    Heat number or identification
