ASTM A249/A249M - Standard Specification for Welded Austenitic Steel Boiler, Superheater, Heat-Exchanger, and Condenser Tubes
Ordering Information
Buyers must specify:
- Quantity (length/number of tubes)
- Material grade (Table 1)
- Size (outside diameter, nominal wall thickness)
- Length (cut, random, or specific)
- Optional requirements (e.g., hydrostatic testing, non-destructive testing, certification)
- Special packaging (if required)
Steel Grades & Chemical Composition
Common grades include:
- TP304/304L, TP316/316L, TP321, TP347, etc.
- Chemical composition limits for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, nickel, and other alloying elements are specified in Table 1.
Mechanical Properties
- Tensile strength, yield strength, elongation requirements are listed in Table 2.
- Hardness tests may be required for certain applications.
Manufacture & Process Requirements
- Tubes are made by automatic welding with no filler metal.
- Cold-worked or heat-treated (solution-annealed) conditions are specified.
Inspection & Testing Requirements
- Hydrostatic or non-destructive electric testing (NDE) is mandatory.
- Flattening, reverse flattening, flange, or bend tests may be required.
- Intergranular corrosion tests (e.g., ASTM A262) for certain grades.
- Certification of compliance with the standard is required.
Certification & Marking
- Tubes must be marked with manufacturer’s name, grade, heat number, size, and standard designation (A249 or A249M for metric).
- Test reports must include chemical and mechanical test results.
