ASTM A312/A312M Standard Specification for Seamless, Welded, and Heavily Cold Worked Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipes

Scope
Covers seamless, welded, and heavily cold worked austenitic stainless steel pipes for high temperature and general corrosive service.
Includes nominal (average) wall and minimum wall thickness pipes.
Metric (A312M) and inch-pound (A312) versions are included.

    Ordering Information

    Buyers must specify:
    ● Quantity (length, number of pipes)
    ● Material (grade, UNS number)
    ● Manufacturing method (seamless, welded, or cold worked)
    ● Dimensions (NPS, schedule, or wall thickness)
    ● Heat treatment requirements
    ● Test requirements (hydrostatic, nondestructive testing)
    ● Certification and inspection needs
    ● Any additional requirements (e.g., special finishes)

    Steel Grades and Chemical Composition

    Common grades include:
     TP304/304L, TP316/316L, TP321, TP347, TP310S (full list in Table 1).
UNS designations (e.g., S30400, S31603) and composition limits (Cr, Ni, C, Mo, etc.) are specified.

    Mechanical Properties

Tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation requirements per grade (Table 2).
Hardness limits may apply for certain grades.

    Manufacturing Methods

Seamless: Produced by hot working or cold working.
Welded: Made by automatic welding without filler metal; weld seams must pass nondestructive testing.
Cold Worked: Heavy cold working for enhanced strength.

    Heat Treatment

Solution annealing is mandatory for all grades (quenched in water or rapidly cooled).
Specific temperatures and cooling methods vary by grade.

    Inspection and Testing

Hydrostatic Testing: Required unless replaced by nondestructive testing (NDT).
Nondestructive Testing: Eddy current, ultrasonic, or radiographic testing for welded pipes.
     Chemical Analysis: Per heat/lot.
Mechanical Tests: Tensile, hardness, flattening, flare, or bend tests as applicable.

    Certification and Marking

Manufacturer must provide certification of compliance.
     Pipes must be marked with:
       Manufacturer’s name/logo
       Grade (e.g., TP304)
       Heat number
       Size and schedule
       ASTM standard (A312/A312M)
